We've all had a bad hair day, but what about a "bad makeup day"?
If you wear makeup regularly you will know the feeling and its probably happened more than once. Even though you follow the same routine, use the same tools and techniques, and apply everything in the usual order with that fancy brush you have, it just doesn't turn out how you'd like. Your foundation feels cakey (the worst), your blush just isn't blending, and everything just looks, off.
Well I am here to give you a little insight into why this is and how you can prevent further 'bad makeup days', and guess what? it's really quite simple.
Prep your skin girl, & cleanse
This won't be a surprise to you I'm sure, but cleansing it's quite literally the most important step to getting the perfectly, flawless makeup look. To get the most out of your makeup routine, you need to ensure your skin is clean. After all, it's about creating a blank canvas that’s ready to hold your makeup.
Answer me this: would you apply paint to a dirty wall?
Always wash your face, removing any traces of yesterdays' makeup, dirt and oils. Use a gentle cleanser that can also work as a makeup remover too.
Use a gentle exfoliator
Cakey makeup isn't the end goal here. To avoid the 'desert-ground look' you need to buff and polish away any dead skin cells that will cause your makeup to look flaky.
Using an exfoliating face scrub or cleanser will give your makeup a smooth, solid base to grip onto. We recommend exfoliating a few times a week to remove any dead skin cells, or to use a gentle exfoliator that can be used every day like our powder-to-foam cleanser.
Remove last traces & tone the skin
A step that is often missed but for some, is the most important step for a smoother complexion and the perfect makeup base. Toners exist to refresh the skin with adding hydration, and removing any excess traces of cleanser, dirt or makeup. Choose a natural, alcohol-free toner like rose water as it packs a lot of hydration back into the skin, in addition to powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Moisturise your skin girl, this is a must
Now to complete the prep, apply a light cream moisturiser, or face oil that absorbs nicely into the skin. Apply your chosen moisturiser and allow the product to fully sink in before moving on to the makeup application stage.
Even if you feel like you have oily skin, do not neglect this very important step. Oily skin needs moisture too and if you're worried, use products that are non-comedogenic like hemp seed oil. Hemp seed is a dry oil that closely resembles the sebum (oils) that your skin naturally produces. It's absorbed quickly by the skin and works to actually alleviate oily skin - basically an oily skin must-have.
Now your skin is ready
Taking the time to prepare your skin for makeup ensures that it goes on smoothly and stays put from morning to night without the need for retouching.
By following these simple steps you’ll be amazed at how flawless your foundation looks, and how fabulous that blended blush lasts without smudging or fading. You may even start to call yourself a pro :-)
